Celebrate LGBTQ History Month with The Student Life Multicultural Center! 

There are multiple ways that the Ohio State University celebrates LGBTQ history month including programming, visibility campaigns and educational events. LGBTQ month is focused on both developing a sense of community within the LGBTQ and allied groups as well as reaching out to the entire campus and Central Ohio community to educate about current issues that bridge all communities and bring us all together as one University.

Time: Friday, September 28, 2018 6 - 9 p.m.
Location: Blackburn House, Victory Room

Join the Student Life Multicultural Center Latinx initiatives and LGBTQ Initaives for a night full of food, dancing and celebration. This event will explore the interconnections of the LGBTQ+ and Latinx community and explore the history of Latinx in the Queer Movement. Celebrate coming out and coming of age!

LGBTQ History Month Kickoff Keynote: Ashleigh Shackelford

Time: Thursday, October 4, 2018, 6 - 9 p.m.
Location: US Bank Conference Theater
Admission: Free

Ashleigh Shackelford (she/they) is a Black fat cultural producer, data futurist and visual artist. 
Ashleigh's work focuses on Blackness, the body, healing and afro-technology. Ashleigh is the creator and director of Free Figure Revolution, a southern body liberation organization that empowers Black, fat, queer and trans bodies through community initiatives and programming. She is also the project director and creator of The Fat Census and the Queer Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Survey. As a data futurist and content creator, Ashleigh curates more information to create tangible resources for vulnerable communities in addition to programming and safe spaces for marginalized bodies.

Q*mmunity Dialogues: LGBTQ History Dialogue

Time: Tuesday, October 9, 2018 8 - 9:30 p.m.
Location: Alonso Family Room of the Multicultural Center in the Ohio Union

The Q*mmunity Dialogues are open, inclusive gatherings for queer and allied students to discuss their experiences and explore issues faced by LGBTQQIAP communities.

Attendees engage with topics on identities, navigating campus and community life and more. Community is built through education, service and social activities to foster an environment of understanding, respect and unity on our campus. Student leaders plan and facilitate each of these fun gatherings.

Meetings are the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at 8 p.m. in the Student Life Multicultural Center.

Feel free to walk into any meeting. We look forward to meeting you!

Let’s Be Queer: Roundtable Discussion (DICE)

Time: Tuesday, October 16, 2018, 8 - 9:30 p.m.
Location: Ohio Union, Multicultural Center, Alonso Family Room

Join us for an evening of round table discussions on various topics related to being a queer woman identifying person on campus and the intersectional identities that impact each of our lives in unique ways. Each table will have a different topic for discussion and a moderator to facilitate the discussion. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit more than one discussion table during the event.

OUAB and the Student Life Multicultural Center Presents: OUABreaking the Ice with Adam Rippon

Time: Wednesday, October 17, 2018, 7 p.m.

Location: West Ballroom 

To celebrate LGBTQ History Month, the Ohio Union Activities Board is bringing keynote speaker: Adam Rippon! He made history as the first openly gay athlete to win a Winter Olympic medal and continued to shine as America’s sweetheart when he took home the coveted Mirrorball Trophy on Dancing With The Stars: Athletes. He is on the TIME 100 Most Influential People List and will be speaking to Ohio State students on October 17th about his work as an LGBTQ+ advocate, athlete and rising star!

 

LGBTQ History Month: Black in the Rainbow

Time: Tuesday, October 23, 2018, 6 - 8 p.m.
Location: MLK Room, Hale Hall

While there has been a long history of the presence and contributions of Black LGBTQ leaders within our community, why do we still struggle with issues of exclusion? This program seeks to engage the community in meaningful conversations around tensions between being both Black and LGBTQ, homophobia in spaces such as Black student spaces on campus, NPHC organizations and the Black church. Come join the Student Life Multicultural Center in an engaging discussion to celebrate the multiple lived experiences of all Black students within the Buckeye Community.

A panel discussing LGBTQ+ veterans experiences prior to, during and after “Don’t ask, don’t tell”. The panel will include veterans from various branches of the military, multiple generations and spanning the LGBTQ+ spectrum.

LGBTQ History Month: Decolonizing Queer Identities and Experiences

Join American Indian Student Initiatives and LGBTQ Student Initiatives for a lunch and learn discussion centered on the definition of decolonization and its impact upon identities and experiences within the Queer community. Lunch will be provided. This program is a part of the First Year Success Series and LGBTQ History Month.

Open Safe Zone

The Safe Zone project aims to create a more welcoming and more inclusive campus environment, to strengthen community, and to encourage networking among faculty, staff and students toward the goal of supporting the diverse individuals and communities with minoritized sexual and/or gender identities.
