Word! is a spoken word and poetry slam event hosted by the Multicultural Center in collaboration with Never Let Your Pen Dry to encourage creative and innovative outlet in order to build solidarity and community of artistic statement.

Word! will be featuring Janani Balasubramanian of the performance art duo Dark Matter. As a self-identifying trans South Asian, Janani has performed in venues across the US and Europe and has been featured in the NY Public Theater's Under the Radar series. Follow this link to check out some of Janani's work.

Dark Matter is a trans south asian performance art duo comprised of Alok Vaid-Menon and Janani Balasubramanian. Based in New York City, DarkMatter regularly performs to sold-out houses at venues like La MaMa Experimental Theater, the Brooklyn Museum, Nuyorican Poets Café, and the Asian American Writer’s Workshop. DarkMatter was recently part of the Public Theater’s Under the Radar Festival, the Lincoln Center's La Casita Festival, and the Queer International Arts Festival.

Known for their quirky aesthetic and political panache, DarkMatter has been invited to perform at stages and universities across the world.

We look forward to welcoming half of this duo, Janani, to our campus.
