Time: Sunday, August 11, 2019 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Location: West Virginia
On this trip, First-Year students will backpack a section of trail in Dolly Sods Wilderness Area. WV. Participants will have a chance to focus on developing backcountry and leadership skills while connecting with nature, other first-year students and Ohio State. Student leaders will provide guidance on how to set up tents and cook in the backcountry. This trip is appropriate for novice and experienced backpackers looking for a true backcountry experience. At the end of the trip, first year students who have elected to be an OWL (all Wilderness Welcome participants are encouraged to be OWLs*) will move-in early (August 15th) and can safely store their residence hall items at the OAC for the duration of the trip. OAC staff will assist in the move-in process on August 15th so a participant’s family only needs to make one trip to campus. This trip is also available for one academic credit hour. More information can be found here.
*Students who elect not to be an OWL or who don’t register by June 30th can: return home on August 15th and move in on the normal move-in day, August 18th or pay Residence Life for early move-in (typically $40/day).
This is a backcountry trip: Participants on this trip will sleep in tents and there will be no access to showers, running water, or other modern amenities.
