Time: Wednesday, August 7, 2019 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Location: Stanton, Kentucky
On this trip, First-Year students will climb at the Red River Gorge, one of the premier climbing destinations in the eastern United States. Participants on this trip will experience front-country camping and climbing in the Daniel Boone National Forest and surrounding area. Participants will learn skill progression, equipment selection, terminology, and potential risks as foundational skills for climbing. Material will include knot tying, use of belay devices, and risk management around the climbing site. Student leaders will help develop the leadership skills of first-year students. The trip is challenging, yet appropriate for both novice and more experienced climbers. At the end of the trip, first year students who have elected to be an OWL(all Wilderness Welcome participants are encouraged to be OWLs*) will move-in early (August 15) and can safely store their residence hall items at the OAC for the duration of the trip. OAC staff will assist in the move-in process on August 15 so a participant’s family only needs to make one trip to campus. This trip is also available for one academic credit hour. More information can be found here.
*Students who elect not to be an OWL or who don’t register by June 30 can: return home on August 15 and move in on the normal move-in day, August 18 or pay Residence Life for early move-in (typically $40/day).
