First-Gen Student Community Mentorship Program

The Student Life Multicultural Center First Generation College Student Community Connections Mentorship Program aims to support the well-being and success of first-gen students both academically and personally. The mentoring program pairs students, staff, faculty and alumni with first-gen students who may be at any stage of their academic career at Ohio State.

It is helpful to be able to connect with someone who has been “around the block” before and can share some tools and strategies related to discovering people and places that feel right for you, navigating new parts of your own identity and experience, managing coursework and part-jobs, and just offering a supportive sounding board. And, sometimes we don’t know what we don’t know! This, along with being someone you can experience your trials and tribulations with is exactly what a mentor is!

All first-gen students are welcome! Registration is on a rolling basis, meaning you can register anytime during the academic year. We will schedule some time to talk with you about what your experiences have been, and then will match you with a mentor who might be a good fit for you. From there you can schedule coffee meetings, time to just chat over Zoom or meet more formally in the MCC. There are also a few different first-gen gatherings that you will be invited to through the year.

Information about registration will be available at the beginning of September. If you have questions or would like more information, contact Angie Wellman.
